Salt water ice cream is actually a popular treat in Japan, but because of the saltiness it doesn't appeal to children. In anime it's a common iconography of coming to age when a young character starts to enjoy such treats.


So inadvertently or not, this is actually an amazing piece where he's being deprived this rite of passage into young adulthood.... So very fitting given his attire.
